Mental health assessment for Urangan siege accused

A MAN who allegedly sparked a standoff with armed police in Urangan has been ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.

Mark Morris , 41, was arrested outside his Hibiscus St home on Wednesday after he allegedly armed himself with a replica gun and threatened to harm a group of youths.

Heavily armed police surrounded his unit block and used a negotiator to call for Morris, who was allegedly barricaded alone in his apartment, to come out on his veranda.

Parts of Hibiscus and Pilot Sts were shut down for more than an hour as police coaxed Morris out.

He was eventually arrested and charged with two counts of threatening violence.

The Hervey Bay Magistrates Court heard Morris was unfit to front court on Thursday.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell said that if Morris was in the "condition" he was said to be in, he would have thought a mental health assessment would have already been carried out.

He ordered Morris be assess and remanded him in custody pending further inquiries.
