Family travels on holidays in motorcycle built for four

MANY long distance family vacations involve a car stacked to the roof with clothes and travel items - but the Topfer family from Tannum Sands have ditched all that in favour of a motorcycle built for four.

Mal, wife Anya and their children, Kian, 7, and Jai, 9, load up their Triumph 955 Tiger and sidecar when they go on holiday.

The family recently stayed in Hervey Bay - an easy trip compared to the 2000km maiden voyage the family took around outback Queensland.

The construction effort took Mal, who works as a machinist, about a year to build the sidecar from steel sections and aluminium.

He also had help from Anya as he completed the project.

It cost about $6000 to complete.

The sidecar has a rollbar, rear boot, glove box and even a cup holder for Anya's coffee when she gets into the sidecar.

An intercom system keeps the whole family in touch while they are on the road.

Jai, who has a Honda 50cc back home, loves touring in the rig.

"It means not being in the car," he said.

A trip to Uluru is hopefully next on the list of big adventures.
