THE "lowest of the low" have broken into the depot of Hervey Bay's State Emergency Service and stolen hundreds of dollars worth of valuable equipment in the lead up to storm season.

Between Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning, windows in the depot's vehicles were smashed and items were stolen.

But the thieves didn't stop there.

A window was broken in the SES's valuable Mobile Command Centre, a GPS, bolt cutters and binoculars were among items taken.

Hervey Bay SES group leader Elizabeth Burton couldn't describe why someone would damage a community group.

"I have no idea," she said.

"They're the lowest of the low. We have to put in claims for insurance and start fundraising again.

"Particularly the GPS - it helps direct us when we need to go to a house

Ms Burton, who has been with the group for 18 years, said the members are lost for words.

"We're just disappointed," she said.

"That some people would like to rip off the SES is beyond me.

"Maybe now it's time to say to the council, we need CCTV."

A complaint was made to Hervey Bay police.
