FIFTIES plus is a Hervey Bay singles group for people to socialise and have fun together.

Michael Thompson is a new member and joined the group to meet new people and make friends.

"I only knew married couples in town and that doesn't work when you are single," he said.

"This group is for people who are specifically single and wanting to get together to have fun.

"I've only been to a couple of functions, but they made me feel welcome.

"I'm fairly quiet until I get to know people a lot better."

Des Thomas said there had been a lot of response since the notice went into the paper a few weeks ago.

"We've had a lot of calls about the group, the only thing we tell anyone who wants to join is that they have to be over 50 and single," he said.

"We need to stress that it's not a pick-up point, it's more about people socialising and having fun together.

"I didn't know anyone in town and on New Year's Eve last year I was introduced to the group and that's how I came to join."

Elsa Cox said that many people sat at home alone and this group was a good way to socialise.

"There are a lot of single people in Hervey Bay," she said.

"The more that come to our group, the more fun we have and it's a good way of bonding with people.

"Sometimes we get a few Maryborough people but they often drop off because we don't have anything happening in Maryborough.

"If we get people who are interested we'll go there."

The group's activity itinerary is full and includes ten pin bowling, picnics, dancing and cruising.

Phone Des on 0481 302 998, Elsa on 0420 719 060 or Carole on 0424 429 777.
