A WOMAN has been charged with four counts of fraud after allegedly asking Maryborough residents for money, claiming her baby had died.
The alleged scam was reported in the Chronicle on March 27 when Maryborough's Gwen McKenzie told the paper she had given the woman $240 after the woman allegedly told she needed money to get to Brisbane after the death of her baby daughter.
Moved by the woman's story, Ms McKenzie offered her assistance, not only giving her money but also giving the woman a lift to pick her son up from school and taking her home again.
But Ms McKenzie began to doubt the truth of the story when she was informed by others living near her that they had been approached by the same woman.
After Ms McKenzie shared her story, others came forward alleging they had also been approached by the woman, who was said to have told some residents that she couldn't afford medication for her child or that her car was broken down, in an effort to get money from them.
The woman is due to appear in Maryborough Magistrates Court on April 28.
