UPDATE: A 63-year-old man airlifted from a head-on crash on the Bruce Hwy near Tiaro on Thursday afternoon is now in a stable condition.

A representative for Nambour Hospital said the man was now in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

He was flown by RACQ Careflight Rescue Helicopter crew yesterday with leg and chest injuries.

EARLIER: A man was flown to Nambour Hospital in critical condition with leg and chest injuries on Thursday afternoon after a head-on crash on the Bruce Hwy south of Tiaro.

Wide Bay Forensic Crash Unit head Sergeant Steve Webb said it appeared the female driver of a Toyota four-wheel drive travelling north had crossed into the southbound lane about 2pm, colliding with the man's car.

Emergency service officers worked for up to two hours to free the woman from her car.

The RACQ CareFlight rescue helicopter flew to the scene from the Sunshine Coast to take airlift the man.

A spokewoman for the rescue helicopter service said the man, believed to be aged in his 60s, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The female driver and her male passenger were taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with limb injuries, a CareFlight spokeswoman said.
