Creative Toowoomba groomer turns dogs into 'works of art'

WITH scissors, an air brush and a steady hand, Toowoomba's Taryn Binstead turns ordinary pet dogs into living works of arts.

Mrs Binstead has been "creatively grooming" dogs for the past two years.

She was inspired to transform scrappy dogs into artistic pooches after seeing pictures and videos online.

"I have been grooming for 13 years and I always knew I would work in the pet industry and with dogs," the qualified dog trainer said. "I love the creative side of it."

Next week, Mrs Binstead will travel to Sydney to take part in the nation's premier pet grooming event, Groomquest 2013.

The event is a chance for those in the pet industry to receive information and advice from some of the world's most skilled groomers.

Mrs Binstead has been working on Pablo the poodle's design for a few months.

Pablo's hair is grown to a specific length, which usually takes four to five weeks, then designs and shapes are cut into his hair.

The hair is then coloured using non-toxic, dog specific products like chalk, paint and dust.

Pablo's design is still in progress and won't be finished until the day of the competition.

"We are like artists using a living canvas," she said.

Mrs Binstead will take Pablo as well as Sooty the poodle cross shih Tzu to Sydney for the event.

She will also use her skills on a burmese cat for the creative feline section.

"These guys (the dogs) receive grooming twice a week at the moment," she said.

"They love getting all the attention."

Taryn Binstead of Canine Creation will head to Sydney to compete in Groomquest 2013. She will enter Pablo in the creative grooming section, while Sooty will be in the freestyle grooming section.
