UPDATE: Boy, 6, critically injured in crash at blackspot

UPDATE 7.20PM: A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy was critically injured in a crash between a car and a school bus at a notorious blackspot on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred about 4pm at the horror intersection on Pialba-Burrum Heads Rd and Petersen Rd, just less than a kilometre from where a man was killed in December.

Emergency crews worked for almost an hour to free the boy from the car's wreckage before he was rushed to hospital with head, chest, pelvis and leg injuries.

The female driver, believed to be the boy's mother was also taken to Hervey Bay Hospital.

The school bus was in the final stages of its run with only one child on the bus.

The bus passenger and driver were both treated by paramedics for minor injuries.

Police redirected traffic around the crash scene while paramedics and firefighters worked.

A chopper landed on the roadside, but the six-year-old boy was transported by ambulance before the RACQ CareFlight arrived.

Police are investigating the crash.
