Dead green turtle about 80-90 years old washes up at Urangan

A GREEN turtle estimated to be 80 or 90 years old has washed on the beach at Urangan near Reefworld.

Reefworld owner Greg Wolff took measurements of the creature on Monday morning and found it had a 116cm shell.

He also checked for tags but didn't find any.

A passer-by who first saw the dead turtle on Sunday, said it looked to be injured under its mouth.

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection spokeswoman Rebecca Williams confirmed the animal had suffered significant head injuries from a boat strike.

"Fraser Coast Regional Council plan to remove the carcass," she said.

"Boaties can help protect marine life by slowing their speed in estuaries, sandy strait and shallow inshore areas."
