OPINION: Education needed for fight against obesity

OUR SAY: New figures show the average Aussie will be 5kg heavier by 2031 and three-quarters of us will not be the current normal weight.

I mean it in every sense of the word when I say those figures are truly shocking.

There is an enormous mix of reasons as to why the Fraser Coast and the rest of Australia are facing an obesity epidemic.

A lot of it comes down to our self- control.

When I was growing up there was no such thing as 24-hour fast food restaurants and a visit to Macca's was an experience my parents limited to about three times a year.

Not to get on my 'things were different in my day' horse, but it really is a different ball game now.

One of the best ways to combat this epidemic is education and it seems to be needed more than ever.

When we have 46,000 people on the Fraser Coast classed as overweight or obese we need all the resources and help we can get to bring that number down.

Not for the healthcare system, not to save money or to look better, but for ourselves.
