THE killing of a much-loved dingo on Fraser Island has devastated a Butchulla elder.

Aunty Mally Clarke said she was told yesterday that Inky the dingo was captured and killed by rangers, after it acted aggressively.

Aunty Mally was distraught when she spoke with the Chronicle.

"I cried broken-hearted for my Inky," she said.

"It is like losing one of my family."

Her pleas for the dingo's body to be returned to the Butchulla for burial were refused.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service confirmed it had carried out a humane destruction order.

Fraser Coast area manager Bart Klekar said the dingo was killed due to its continued aggressive and dangerous behaviour towards humans.

"At least three of these dangerous incidents involved children," Mr Klekar said.

Aunty Mally said Inky was harmless and had never bitten anyone.

She remembered how he would come up to her to "give her a kiss" or follow her around the camp.

Prior to Inky's death, Aunty Mally had warned that anyone who killed him would have the bone pointed at them.

Pointing the bone is an Aboriginal curse designed to lead to the death of the person it is pointed towards.

But yesterday, Aunty Mally said the bone would probably not be pointed and she only wanted Inky's body returned.
