About 60 staff at the depot will respond to emergency situations such as downed power lines, but the daily maintenance of lines and poles won't be undertaken today.

Electrical Trades Union organiser Dan Bessell said today's protest was in response to outsourcing of work, which he claims is not done to the same standard.

"Ergon are paying the contractors to do work, the contractor is not doing the work and Ergon are sending blokes out to do the work," he said

"We've been lied to continually about this contract - we're asking questions.

"Ergon have a duty to consult with the electrical Trades Union regarding contracting out."

A comment has been sought from Ergon Energy.
