EXPERT: Kangaroos share bond with family

A FRASER Coast wildlife curator said it was a common sight to see animals in the wild displaying a nurturing attitude towards their family.

Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary's Ray Revill said kangaroos were a very tight family unit.

Responding to a heartfelt sighting by River Heads man Evan Switzer, Mr Revill said he had seen this sort of behaviour at his wildlife sanctuary.

"I think we (humans) need to take a leaf out of the animals' book," he said.

But it's not just kangaroos that share this 'human-like' bonding experience.

"I have seen birds congregate when another bird goes down and I have seen it with my dingoes," Mr Revill explained.

He said the thump Mr Switzer heard would have most likely been the thump of feet as the kangaroo's way of taking a protective stance for his family.
