A FRENCH couple were injured when their tour bus hit a washout on the beach at Indian Head on Fraser Island.

The two had not yet buckled their seatbelts when the bus hit a sandy washout, sending them out of their seats and into the air.

They landed heavily on the rear bench seat of the bus.

The man, 35, was treated for back injuries while his partner, 29, was treated by the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter paramedic for lower spinal and possible pelvic injuries.

The two were airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.
