Vulnerable frog habitat set to be filled in by department

THE Department of Environment and Heritage Protection will almost certainly ignore a vulnerable frog habitat and fill in a waterhole in the Burrum Coast National Park.

The Chronicle revealed on Tuesday the vulnerable wallum froglet or Crinia tinnula lives in the waterhole - and the Burrum Heads Rural Fire Service says the water is vital in fighting a park fire.

Doug Waters dug the hole three years ago and can't see what the fuss is about.

"It's silly to go to so much effort for something that's not affecting anyone," he said.

"The frogs use it and the firies want it.

"If they're concerned about someone driving into it they should put a sign up."

Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing executive director Neil Cambourn said the hole was illegal and needed to be returned to its original state.

"The hole in the Burrum Coast National Park was dug unlawfully and restoration work will be undertaken in a manner that limits disturbance to wildlife and surrounding vegetation," he said.

"The rehabilitation of the site is to fulfil a court order to restore the national park to as near as is possible to its natural condition prior to the unlawful earthworks being undertaken."

Mr Waters suspected rangers had drained water from the hole in the past few days.
