Key intersection upgrades needed for rising population

HERVEY Bay's traffic network is operating "satisfactorily" but key intersection upgrades will be required to cope with population increases.

A report by GHD for the Fraser Coast Regional Council will be used to identify future network requirements on council-owned roads.

Data for report was collected about a year ago, with 36 existing intersections and key routes through Hervey Bay analysed.

It documented delays for motorists using those roads, but some delays may have been longer due to roadworks.

Infrastructure councillor Trevor McDonald said the report was a comprehensive "forward-looking document".

While he acknowledged there would always be delays, Cr McDonald said Hervey Bay's road network needed to grow alongside its population.

The Chronicle asked our Facebook followers what they thought the worst piece of traffic infrastructure was in the region.

Kylie Salmon's comment about how bad she thought the roundabout on Main St and Boat Harbour Dr attracted more than 60 likes.

Another common problem intersection was Urraween Rd and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Rd.

As Hervey Bay continues to grow Cr McDonald said the model would help the council identify key infrastructure upgrades for the region.

"It (traffic) is an emerging issue," he said.

But not all of the blame was thrown at the current infrastructure with reader Taleese Penna pointing the finger at drivers.

"It's not roundabouts that are (the) problem, no one seems to know how they work - no one knows how to indicate correctly," she wrote.

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the report would be used to advise the council what intersections would need attention in the future.

"It certainly will inform our strategic planning," he said.

Intersection delays

  • Main St and Haydn Dr-205 seconds
  • Bideford and Colyton St- 107 seconds
  • Urraween Rd and Pantlins Lane- 164 seconds
