Gold rethink their strategy

GYMPIE Gold captain Troy Ashton said there might be a change in the Gold's game plan today as they worked to accommodate the Nambour Showgrounds.

The skipper said today's game would see the Gold visiting to play on a field that was the "total opposite" of the Gold's home grounds at Albert Park.

Ashton said unlike the Albert Park grounds, where the Gold had played for the past two matches, boundaries at the Nambour showgrounds offered batsmen long straight hits but short side hits which meant their winning tactics employed against Caboolture and Tewantin-Noosa must change.

Ashton said Albert Park provided batsmen with the opportunity to hit long and was very short for a straight hit.

He said on the odd occasion games had to be played on a field which was starkly different to what they were used to.

However the Gold was keen as mustard never-theless.

He said the Gold was firing on all cylinders in the lead-up to today's one-day match and that there weren't many reasons why they could not further their undefeated streak.

He said while Nambour had not hit its straps yet, they had the benefit of experience.

"They have some good, steady old heads in their side," Ashton said. "If one or two of them gets going, we could be in trouble."

But while the Gold feature some young guns, it also boasts an equally experienced set of players.

Gympie Gold play their one-day match in the Sunshine Coast A-grade competition at the Nambour showgrounds today.
