Good scallop season for fisheries and employees

SHUCKS! Shucking has never felt so good.

Just ask the 20 people who have enjoyed constant employment since the start of the 2012 scallop season in Hervey Bay.

Urangan Fisheries manager Keith Parker said this years' season was not only good business for the fisheries but for the casual employees.

"A good scallop season means employment in Hervey Bay," he said.

"And there's also Hervey Bay Fisheries and Boat Harbour fisheries who employ the same amount of people shucking (shelling) scallops."

For a tourist town this means good wages.

"If we don't have a scallop season, most of our workers leave town and go fruit picking," he said.

With a good prawn season expected to follow the scallop season, Mr Parker said there should be some succulent prawns for the Christmas table.

But he confesses that it is a hard industry to predict.

"We try to stay confident but with the weather - you never know."
