GLENDA Chapman should be planning Christmas.

Instead she is helping to plan her beloved nephew's funeral after he was allegedly stabbed to death at a home in Gladstone last Friday.

Hervey Bay's Justin Chapman was visiting friends when the alleged incident happened.

A 45-year-old man has been charged with the murder of the 22-year-old.

Speaking at her Urangan home, Mrs Chapman said Justin, a keen fisherman and rugby league player, would be missed by his family and many friends.

"He was a happy go lucky guy," she said.

"He was a ratbag at times, but he was our ratbag.

Justin was always happy, Mrs Chapman said.

"He was always laughing and smiling. He always had a smile on his face."

Mrs Chapman regarded him as a son, saying she and her husband had reared him from when he was 4.

She said she had been expecting Justin to come home for Christmas and her family, including her son Liam, had been looking forward to it.

Liam has just turned 18 and he was looking forward to going out with Justin.

Mrs Chapman said Justin would be remembered as someone who loved his friends and family, often travelling along the coast of Queensland to visit them.

She had been preparing to get Christmas presents for her sons and for Justin this week.

Mrs Chapman said it was hard to accept they would never see Justin again.

Mark Bradley Hicks, 45, made a brief appearance before Gladstone Magistrates Court yesterday charged with Justin's murder.

On the charge of murder no bail application was made. He was remanded in custody to February 2.
