Holden reveals all-new Equinox SUV is Australia bound

COMING SOON: Chevrolet reveals its global Equinox SUV model and Holden quickly confirms we'll be seeing it in Australia in 2017.
COMING SOON: Chevrolet reveals its global Equinox SUV model and Holden quickly confirms we'll be seeing it in Australia in 2017.

HOLDEN will be offering a Captiva SUV replacement next year in the shape of Chevrolet's 2018 Equinox.

The mid-size global SUV will complete Holden's fresh SUV range when it arrives in 2017, joining the new Trax and Trailblazer, plus the upcoming Acadia seven-seat large SUV.

The Equinox is listed on Chevrolet's website as a front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive five-seater, while the current Captiva is available as a five- or a seven-seater.

It's unconfirmed if the new SUV will be called Equinox in Australia, but it is far more likely than continuing the Captiva nameplate.

A statement from Holden reads:

"Holden confirms the all-new Equinox SUV will join its line-up in 2017. This world-class SUV is the next step in Holden's commitment to launching 24 new vehicles by 2020.

Alongside the new Trax, Trailblazer and upcoming Acadia, Equinox means Holden will have four new SUVs within two years as the company continues its transformation and building for a bright and sustainable long-term fuutre."

Chevrolet's U.S. statement said the all-new Equinox features "global Chevrolet design cues and sculpted shapes seen in the Volt, Malibu and Cruze," while inside there were the "latest connectivity technologies including 7- and 8-inch diagonal MyLink infotainment systems designed to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto."

In America three turbocharged engines will be offered - including the compact SUV segment's first turbodiesel in North America, clearly indicating the global aim of this Equinox. It will be sold in Europe as well as Australia, markets which favour diesels more than the USA.

Engine line-up - although unconfirmed for Australia - are 127kW/275Nm 1.5-litre and 188kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrolS, plus the 101kW/320Nm 1.6-litre turbo diesel.

Chevrolet says the 2.0-litre petrol will tow up to 3500kg.

Size-wise the Equinox is 4652mm long, 1843mm wide and 1661mm high, making it longer but a tad skinnier and shorter than the Captiva.

The Equinox goes on sale in America in early 2017, with an Australian launch to follow at an unconfirmed date during the same year.
