AS AN elderly woman lay in a coma in a Brisbane hospital yesterday, her alleged attacker, accused of stabbing, punching and kicking her in her own home, was charged with attempted murder.

Urangan man Kane Alan Smith, 20, did not appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court, but his charges were read before Magistrate Graeme Tatnell.

He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

In addition to attempted murder, Smith was also charged with breaching bail conditions, entering a dwelling by break at night

and grievous bodily harm.

Police allege Smith broke into the 71-year-old woman's home in Barnstaple St, Torquay, through a window before attacking her, leaving her with stab wounds to her face and neck.

Police were called to the scene just before 10pm on Saturday and Smith was apprehended.

The woman was flown to Brisbane for treatment, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

When deciding how much time would be needed until the next court appearance, Mr Tatnell asked police prosecutor Sergeant Jeanette Grigoris if the alleged victim was still in a coma. Sgt Grigoris confirmed she was.

Mr Tatnell formally refused bail and Smith was remanded in custody until his next court mention on July 2.

Mr Tatnell said Smith's appearance would not be required.

The court heard that Smith was due to appear in court in relation to several other charges on June 4, but Mr Tatnell adjourned those charges until July 2.
