I will now pronounce you... how?

EDITORIAL: Pssst ... can I let you in on a wee secret?

At one point I thought you folk were just a little bit mad.

Sorry. I know better now.

I lived in South Australia and couldn't for the life of me work out why you insisted on calling Hervey Bay HARvey Bay.

I'd actually forgotten about it until Thursday, when I heard a police officer referring to it as HERvey Bay.

It jarred. I laughed.

It still escapes me, though, as to why this is this case.

Let's face it, the word looks suspiciously like HERvey Bay, doesn'tit.

I've been warned it is not polite to raise this question as it riles some people up.

But you know what us blow-ins from down south are like ... we have no manners.

So maybe you can enlighten me and all of the others who have moved here in recent times.

Why is it HARvey Bay?

While you're at it, maybe you can help out with Tiaro ... again, logic suggests Tee-ar-o but custom says Tyro. Again, why?

I'm sure there are many more that could be discussed.

Actually, my daughter and son-in-law first lived at Toogoom when they arrived here.

I'm not even going to tell you how I pronounced that.

I'm more educated now.
