OPINION: I would support a hemp farm

LOCAL mayoral and councillor candidates Jeanette Maynes and Jannean Dean have a joint plan to scrap the sport precinct and to start a hemp farm on the Nikenbah land.

As out-there and high-as-a-kite as this plan may sound initially, it could have tremendous benefits to the region.

There's a lot of stigma unjustly attached to the hemp plant because of its association with the THC compound and the devastating effects that the drug can have on the community.

But overall, the plant Cannabis Sativa can produce paper, textiles to replace cotton, building materials and much more.

The logistic of starting a hemp industry on the Fraser Coast and all that goes with manufacturing it would be quite costly, but I cannot imagine it totalling more than the $52 million price tag for the sport precinct.

Perhaps the current councillors could look into the feasibility of a hemp farm, if not in Nikenbah, but somewhere else.

No doubt there would be hurdles and obstacles to overcome, but judging by what our readers have said so far, there's a stronger support for a hemp farm than the sport precinct.
