SHE may look one wheel short of a bicycle but Hervey Bay's Janita Knowles is right at home on her municycle - the mountain bike version of a unicycle.

With its 26-inch diameter wheel and knobbly tyre, Janita, 52, tackles the Esplanade bike path with gusto on her unconventional transport.

"The 14km of bikeway along the foreshore is perfect for cycling and being active," Janita said.

"And the handrail at the Margaret St rock groin is ideal for beginners to find their balance".

This is her second unicycle since learning to ride 18 months ago.

At $500 it doesn't have any bells or whistles but is built to take on the roughest of terrains.

Newcomers can get started for under $100 but save some dollars for knee and elbow guards, gloves and a helmet.
