Magistrate warns drunk man not to attend court intoxicated

A MARYBOROUGH man has been warned not to attend court drunk after his matter had to be adjourned due to his intoxication on Thursday morning.

Bill Kennedy, 37, was told to wait outside the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court after he arrived in the public gallery area.

He was seen to be talking loudly and slurring his words, disrupting the court process.

When the matter was called Kennedy did not appear in the courtroom and defence lawyer Michael Riedel asked for an adjournment on his behalf.

"He said to me he only had two drinks today," Mr Riedel said.

Mr Riedel said he had advised Kennedy not to appear at court under the influence of alcohol.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell asked Mr Riedel to warn Kennedy of the consequences if he came to court intoxicated.

"You tell him if he comes along intoxicated the matters won't be dealt with that day and he will remain in custody until they can be dealt with in the next week," Mr Tatnell said.

Kennedy is charged with public nuisance, possessing utensils related to drugs and breach release conditions.

The matters were adjourned to December 11.
