OPINION: Make an example of the thugs

OVER the years as a journalist I have seen countless thugs go through the justice system.

Time and time again I have seen people who have committed violent, sexual or potentially fatal crimes let off with the benefit of the doubt or a slap on the wrist.

Zero tolerance should be shown to repeat offenders who continue to show disregard for our community in sometimes the most violent ways.

I couldn't imagine the terror experienced by the victims of home invasions and serious assaults.

I'm sure some are haunted by the crimes long after the sentence is handed down in court.

Where's the justice in that?

I would love to hear from the Chronicle's readers about penalties for violent offenders.

Would you be in favour of harsher penalties?

Would you like to see longer prison sentences or bigger fines for these sorts of crimes?
