Do we risk becoming village idiots?

MAYBE it's time for the Sunshine Coast to take a liberal dose of "get over yourself".

It might be rude to say when you're only a blow-in, but what the heck.

If the best the Coast can come up with for the future is a village mentality, then perhaps we are indeed the village idiots.

Here's the harsh truth. There are many, many places with beautiful beaches and great mountain views in the world - some of them even right on our doorstep in Australia.

I know! Gasp!

Are the beaches beautiful? Yes.

Is the scenery delightful? Yes.

Are these things marketable? Yes.

But where are the steak knives?

For a long time the Sunny Coast had a stranglehold on its well-deserved status as a sun, fun and nature paradise but the world is a very big place and marketing directors have tapped into the delights of their own patches of heaven to give us a run for our money.

And they are doing it well.

Believe it or not, in some places, after you're done with the beach and the mountain range, you can go for a superb dinner even after 7.30pm. And you can get a steak for less than $30.

But wait ... there's more. Feel like a late night coffee? You can get one.

Not only that, there are fun things for the kids to do - the stuff that memories are made of. I can recall many happy moments when the kids were young at those evil theme parks in the land of Satan down south. Now that may not be the stuff of the Coast but the question is, what is?

There's nothing particularly wrong with the Coast other than its inability to take a good, honest look at itself.

Here's an idea. How about we go into the big room of mirrors and don't start from the view that we have the best beaches and towns in the world so people will just come.

Let's break out the whiteboard (it's a new, modern thing) and draw up a list of pros AND cons of the area.

The Coast has gone beyond village mentality. It is, in truth, a metropolis with a fading heartbeat, ailing from years of infrastructure neglect and an anti-development mentality.

The blow-ins like me are now a fact of life. You built it, we came. Deal with it.
