Paramedics urge all to avoid dehydration this summer

PARAMEDICS are reminding residents, especially the elderly, to make sure they are drinking enough water in the warm summer weather.

Maryborough ambulance acting Officer-in-Charge Jeremy Woods said the combination of warm weather and humidity made it easier for people to become dehydrated.

Mr Woods said people needed to keep in mind that drinking tea and coffee would dehydrate you.

"These are actually diuretics," he said.

"If you have a cup of tea, you should have a glass of water about the same size at the same time."

He warned people should be urging people to keep cool by opening windows and doors and wearing light clothing.

Mr Woods said people at risk also included those working outdoors, exercising or in enclosed spaces.

Those outside should slip, slop, slap and drink plenty of water before, during and after being outdoors. He said symptoms of dehydration included head-aches, lethargy and nausea.

Mr Woods said those who are feeling dehydrated should seek shade, sit down and drink water.
