Parole for man who punched primary school teacher

A STREET fight which left a primary school teacher with permanent injuries to his jaw, has earned a 23-year-old man an 18 month jail sentence.

Scott Ian Preitz fronted the Maryborough District Court this week charged over the grievous bodily harm of 21-year-old Gayndah teacher Dylan Kreis.

Documents before the court stated the pair had been "bickering" during a night of drinking at Gayndah's Golden Orange Hotel when Preitz began to challenge Mr Kreis to a fight more than two years ago.

Police were told that Mr Kreis had refused to fight Preitz out of fear he would lose his job.

Officers were called to the scene and Preitz and another man went home.

The following morning, Mr Kreis was in a takeaway shop at Gayndah when Preitz walked in and again called on him to "settle" their dispute.

Punches were traded but it was Mr Kreis who came off worst, suffering "immediate pain" and a fractured jaw.

With blood coming from his mouth, Mr Kreis walked back into the store and apologised to the owner for fighting outside the shop.

He was taken to the Gayndah Hospital and referred to a dental surgeon in Toowoomba where steel plates and screws were inserted into his jaw the following day.

When he went to the police stationt to make a complaint, he "could not speak" due to the swelling.

When interviewed, Preitz admitted getting into a fight but insisted he had not thrown the first punch.

Prietz pleaded guilty to the greivous bodily harm and two charges of common assault.

He was allowed immediate parole.
