Plea to keep St Stephen’s hospital

THE future of St Stephen's Hospital in Maryborough is still uncertain, but the people of the Fraser Coast have shown how important the centre is to the region.

Last week, Maryborough's Peter Olds took a petition signed by 12,208 people to Brisbane where it was given to Anne Cross, chief executive of Uniting Care Queensland and Richard Royle, Executive Director of Uniting Care Health.

The petition was circulated in an effort to keep the Maryborough private hospital open.

Mr Olds said he was proud of the way Fraser Coast people had supported the petition, adding it was an acknowledgement of how vital the hospital was to the region.

He also praised Anne Maddern for her help as she accepted a copy of the petition on behalf of the State Government and also wrote a letter of support to accompany the petition as it was passed on to Uniting Care Health.

While it was too early to say whether the hospital would be saved, Mr Olds said he felt positive about the facility staying open in some form and added that 60 more signatures had been submitted which would also be included.
