QLD politicians set to grab $50,000 pay rise

QUEENSLAND'S state politicians could receive a pay rise of up to $50,000 if the Newman government conforms with federal law.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the former Labor government's freeze on politician pay packets during the global financial crisis went against legislation that sets state MPs wages just below their federal counterparts.

It means a Queensland backbencher's current base salary of $137,149 would need to increase by more than $52,000 to be in line with the law after federal politicians' wages rose dramatically last year.

Federal backbenchers currently sit on a base wage of $190,550.

Mr Nicholls said the government was looking at several options including changing the legislation to ensure no laws were being breached and breaking the nexus between federal and state pay scales.
