Rail against jobs going elsewhere

EDITORIAL: The closure of the Bombardier factory in Maryborough is a vicious blow for the area and one that didn't necessarily have to be.

When Bombardier won the contract to build new trains for Brisbane's underground transport project, Maryborough could have been protected with a demand that a good portion of the work was done here.

Governments issuing contracts to companies without protecting local jobs is a tiresome yet frequent occurrence.

Truth is, all this "level playing field" and cost-cutting malarky has cost Australia dearly.

When will governments stand up and say "we will look after our own"?

The manufacturing industry is now almost extinct in Australia.

It's a trend that started with the level playing field theory and free-trade agreements that advantage countries that pay their workers diddly while tearing apart the quality of life Australians once enjoyed.

Who is the politician that will lead the chorus of "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore"?

Sadly, there isn't one.

For that matter, when are the rest of us going to start shouting?

I guess we won't do that until it affects us.

There's a very famous quote that ends with the words "when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out".

Google it.
