THE long-awaited celebrations for Gympie's QTAC applicants started yesterday when they found out they had been offered tertiary places in the first major round of offers.

Health (including nursing), society and culture (including law) are the most popular areas of study this year, based on applicants' first preferences.

At the University of the Sunshine Coast, the Bachelor of Nursing Science is once again the most sought-after study program.

USC has offered 232 places to new Nursing Science students in Semester 1.

Gympie applicants Shaun Ward, Tom Canniffe and Luke Tramacchi were all happy with their offers yesterday, though Shaun intends to accept his offer and then take a gap year to save some money.

Luke plans to accept his offer of a Bachelor of Arts and complete a year of year of it before taking a two-year "gap year" to work in a mission for his church.

Tom was offered his first preference of a double degree Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Government and International Relations. He said he was always confident of getting in "but still nervous" until he saw the offer in writing.

More than 38,000 applicants were able to log on from 1am yesterday.

The successful applicants joined about 11,400 others who received offers in the December and earlier offer rounds (for selected performing arts, distance education and other courses), bringing the total applicants receiving offers to 82.1%.

Successful applicants will now need to respond to their offers before the January 25 due date to secure their place.
