A TEENAGE boy sustained a serious eye injury after running into a barbed wire fence on a private property in Maryborough yesterday.

It is understood the young boy was playing with friends when the accident occurred.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked on a hospital transfer to airlift the injured boy around 9.30pm last night.

The crew flew to Maryborough Hospital to retrieve the patient, before transferring him to the Royal Children's Hospital to undergo further medical treatment.

He travelled in a stable condition with his mother accompanying him on the flight.
