OUR SAY: Sharks are not the only danger

THE weekend's sighting of a shark in the water off Hervey Bay has sparked a bit of debate in the Fraser Coast Chronicle offices.

Do we need to go back to the "good old days" of having a shark enclosure or other mitigation measures?

Or are two sightings a season not enough to warrant it?

Bundaberg and Rainbow Beach use drum lines, but they regularly snare dolphins and other marine creatures.

That's a bit of a problem in somewhere like the Fraser Coast where we are promoted as a marine tourism destination.

A study commissioned by the WA Department of Fisheries and carried out by Queensland's Bond University also suggests they are not totally effective.

Shark enclosures, on the other hand, create a complete physical barrier and were less dangerous to marine life... but were much more expensive to build and maintain.

One of the big drawcards for Hervey Bay beaches is the perceived safety, and we need to maintain that if we want families to keep coming back.

Personally, I feel the danger is more likely to be in accidental drowning or getting hit by a tinny or jet-ski than shark attack.
