Mayor offers words of wisdom from his sick bed

SPEAKING from his bed in his second week in hospital, Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell admits he's lost without his job.

"I love being busy and I love moving around," the mayor told the Chronicle on Monday.

"That's what's really got to me, thinking that I would have gone to this thing or been at that thing - it's been two weeks now."

Cr O'Connell came off his bike on the June long weekend.

He was admitted to hospital the Saturday before last with an infection.

He said it had been a humbling experience and his stay had given him a newfound appreciation for medical professionals.

"I'll never take showering for granted again," he said with a laugh.

"I have had to get assistance from nursing staff with that.

"They have been very good to me.

"You really have to take your hat off to them because they do such an amazing job."

Cr O'Connell said the budget, which has been delayed because of his stay in hospital, would likely be adopted on July 3.

However, he said that would depend on how his treatment went in the next few days.
