M'boro Correctional Centre housing 589 inmates

THE Maryborough Correctional Centre is currently housing 589 inmates, believed to be the highest number the prison has ever held.

Together Union representative Ian Barber has continually campaigned for safer working conditions and a better staff to inmate ratio.

But a Queensland Corrective Services spokesman was playing down the inmate surge, claiming the prison could manage as many prisoners as required.

"Queensland Corrective Services has the ability to cater for as many prisoners as required, and adapts accordingly," he said.

"QCS is fully scalable to ensure prisoner numbers - which fluctuate for a range of reasons - can be accommodated at any given point in time."

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie visited the MCC in November to talk to staff on the ground about their conditions.

And earlier last year Mr Bleijie said $61 million would be invested into recommissioning, refurbishing and expanding existing correctional centres to deliver 650-plus new beds.

But the MCC missed out, with the money going toward recommissioning the Borallon Correctional Centre, Townsville Correctional Centre, expanding the Lotus Glenn Correctional Centre and the Numinbah Centre.

He said there was an ability to transfer prisoners between correctional centres accross Queensland.

The Chronicle asked the Department of Corrective Services whether any more staff had been employed but the department failed to provide a response.
