Girl, 2, fighting for life after near-drowning in dam

A TODDLER was fighting for life on Sunday night after being pulled unconscious from a dam on a rural property at Sunshine Acres.

Emergency service workers were told the two-year-old girl went into the water after the back door of the home was accidentally left open about 12.30pm on Sunday.

The alarm was reportedly raised when the girl's older siblings found her in the dam and called for help.

By the time she was taken out of the water, she had stopped breathing.

The girl's mother, who the Chronicle understands is a swimming instructor, performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

A Queensland Ambulance representative said one ambulance was nearby and got to the scene within minutes while two more arrived soon after.

The girl was revived and rushed to the Hervey Bay Hospital where she was treated for life-threatening injuries.

Several police officers remained at the scene throughout the afternoon.

The girl's family was last night travelling to Brisbane where she was expected to be airlifted for further treatment.

A spokesman for Wide Bay Health confirmed that at the time of going to press, the toddler remained in a critical condition.
