OPINION: Gendered toy debate a storm in pink teacup

OPINION: I sometimes (mostly) don't understand the reasoning of politicians.

For example take the unusual statement by Greens Senator Larissa Waters calling on gift-giving adults to ensure they only purchased gender "neutral" toys for their children.

Senator Waters said that while "starkly separate aisles of pink and blue" might seem harmless they were setting such strong gender stereotype at an early age that it could have long-term impacts, including self-perception and career aspirations.

The Senator went on to say that such stereotypes perpetuate gender inequality which "feeds into very serious problems such as domestic violence and the gender pay gap".

What rubbish.

The decision on what to buy their children is, and always will be, the responsibility of the parents.

To even consider that a five-year-old would become concerned over the colour or type of toys they were given is ludicrous.

There is no evidence to suggest gender-based toys cause any psychological harm whatsoever.

For the past hundreds of years little boys have played with toy trucks, aeroplanes and building kits while little girls, by and large, enjoy playing with dolls, tea sets and dressing up.

That's not to say that if little Johnny wanted to play with a doll and little Susie wanted a monster truck they shouldn't be allowed to.

The bottom line is this: children should be allowed to be children without the intervention of politicians.
