FURTHER UPDATE 10.15am:

THE driver of an XL Express delivery truck amazingly escaped the wreckage of his truck after it left the road and careered down a steep embankment 3kms south of Bloomsbury.

Proserpine volunteer members of the QFES said the man had been taken to hospital but wouldn't speculate on the cause of the crash which happened on straight stretch of the Bruce Hwy.

The cab of the five tonne truck which was carrying mailed packages was mangled by the force of the impact of the truck hitting obstacles as after it left the road.

More on the condition of the driver will be published as information comes to light.

Two Queensland Ambulance Service crews are on scene.

A QAS spokesperson said the driver, a man in his 30s, had suffered a significant laceration to the head but was in a stable condition and his vitals were within normal limits.

The man managed to get himself out of the vehicle.

The truck reportedly slid down an embankment.
