Truss brushes off reports of leadership tensions

DEPUTY Prime Minister Warren Truss has brushed off reports of leadership tensions within the National Party.

Over the weekend Fairfax news outlets reported the maverick and controversial Member for New England Barnaby Joyce was making moves hurry Mr Truss out the leadership door.

Mr Joyce is widely considered to be the "heir-apparent" to the Nationals leadership.

The leader of the National Party is automatically anointed Deputy Prime Minister in a coalition government, as per the terms of the agreement between the National and Liberal parties.

A spokesman for the Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay yesterday noted that Mr Truss had not contributed to the Fairfax reports and said he had "nothing to add to them".

"He is confident of his support in The Nationals Party Room," the spokesman said.

The Nationals leadership has traditionally been the most stable of the federal parties and Mr Truss has remained as leader since 2007.
