VIOLENCE erupted in Maryborough's nightlife precinct in the early hours of Sunday morning when a brawl broke out in Wharf St.
It is believed up to 50 people were involved in the punch-up, which happened about 3am.
A police spokesman said when police arrived the fighting had ceased but between 30 and 40 people were "milling around" the area.
Police dispersed the crowd and no arrests were made in relation to the incident.
The spokesman said there had been no assault complaints made in relation to the brawl.
He said it was unclear what sparked the incident but said that at that time in the morning, alcohol was probably a factor.
Senior Constable Melanie Ryan said from a policing point of view, it was important to reiterate the message that one punch could kill.
"It's okay to walk away," she said.
"Walk away because it can escalate very quickly."
Snr Const Ryan said planning ahead when enjoying a night out could also prevent trouble.
