Veronica, 83, to run 21km race

MARYBOROUGH’S Veronica Fischer will be 84 later this year.

She said the secret to enjoying a long life was staying active – she’s certainly doing that.

Fischer will run just over 21km, well, she says she will jog a little and walk some of the way, during a race in July.

Not just any race either.

She’s going to contest the half marathon during the annual Gold Coast Marathon, an event she’s no stranger to.

A member of the Fraser Coast Walkers and Runners Club, Fischer has made the pilgrimage south every year since 1999 to take part in a number of races on the big day.

She’s done the full marathon, the half-marathon an impressive nine times and you can also throw in the 10km run a couple of times.

Now she’s setting her sights on finishing another half marathon and with good reason.

She will be awarded a certificate of recognition and commemorative t-shirt when she is inducted into the 10 Year Club to recognise her 10th running of a half marathon on the Gold Coast.

Fischer, who is also one of the oldest entries so far, said she’s determined to finish the race and do it in style.

“I just want to do my best to finish this year … I think the 10 Year Club is a big achievement, especially at my age,” she said.

“Hopefully I will finish it within the three-hour time limit.

“I’ve done the 10km run for the past two years but I am confident I can complete half marathon – besides, it’s not that much more to run,” she laughed.

As for her preparation, Fischer said she had been training hard with clubmate and champion marathon runner, Joan Darlington.

“We’ve been putting in the yards each morning,” she said.

“I’ve got no doubt that Joan will keep me going.”

When she finishes the race, how will Fischer celebrate?

“I like the occasional beer but I think a glass of red wine will be in order this time,” she said.
