VIDEO: 'Dirty Dozen' charged after slanging match

A "DIRTY dozen" were charged after an alleged Australia Day slanging match in a designated "wet area" got out of hand.

Maryborough Police District Crime Prevention Officer Senior Constable Melissa Watherston were called to Ron Beaton Park on Charlton Esplanade, Torquay after men and women in their late-teens and early-20s allegedly  began to yell at each other about 4pm.

"The people involved were using profanities at each other and at police," she said.

Snr Const Watherston said the events happened in clear view of a number of young families.

The wet areas had been set up in order for families to have a safe place to celebrate Australia Day while outdoors.

Snr Const Watherston said the area had also been manned by police.

"They have chosen one of the well-populated areas to do this," she said.

The 12 were charged with a public nuisance and obstruct police offences.
