TWO GIRLS BASHED WITH FENCE PALINGS

Averyll Loft

Two teenage girls have horrific facial injuries after allegedly being beaten with a fence paling by a 16-year-old boy in Maryborough on Sunday.

The girls, aged 15 and 16, were initially taken to Hervey Bay Hospital but were airlifted to Brisbane for facial surgery yesterday.

Police said that just before 1.30pm the two girls approached a 13-year-old girl in the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens on Kent Street.

After the girl left, it is alleged an altercation occurred between the two girls and a 16-year-old boy.

Alice Ninnes, a resident who lives across the road from the rose gardens, said she was putting out her rubbish when she heard screams coming from the park.

"I looked over and saw a group of teenage boys standing in a group near the eating area in the park," she said.

"It looked like they were playing. There are always kiddies playing over there.

"I heard screaming but never heard any calls for help so I got into my car and was leaving when I saw the girls walking across the road past my car."

Ms Ninnes said the girls had blood streaming down their faces.

"All I could see was blood."

Police said a 16-year-old was being dealt with under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Investigations are continuing.
