Anti-terror fence goes up for Maryb'h firies

Anne-Louise Brown

The threat is imminent. Pre-emption is the key. And with all this in mind work has begun at Maryborough's fire station.

A 2.4m barrier fence is being built as an "anti-terrorist measure", says Queensland Fire and Rescue north coast region strategic development acting manager Phil Whittaker.

Comparisons with the impenetrable Fort Knox have whistled up and down Lennox Street this week as passing motorists have noticed the tall concrete bollards being built around the perimeter of the fire station, on the corner of Alice Street.

It is all part of a statewide upgrade of security at fire stations to bring them into line with anti-terrorist policy.

"There are different levels of security for different facilities," Mr Whittaker said.

"I can't disclose the different levels but I can say that because Maryborough is home to the regional office the security measures are increased."

The fence is expected to be finished by the end of the month and will be locked up outside business hours.

Mr Whittaker said the fence would not hinder fire trucks and the station would be accessible during business hours.
