Rangers set traps for Strait croc

The search for a four-metre crocodile seen near Stewart Island continued yesterday after Environmental Protection Agency staff set traps in the area.

Two crocodile traps were set in the Great Sandy Strait on Tuesday afternoon after the EPA received a report a saltwater crocodile was seen swimming in a creek near Garry's Anchorage on Fraser Island on Tuesday morning

EPA staff believe it was the same crocodile seen circling a fisherman's boat last week.

Signs have been put up in the area to warn people to be cautious and rangers have been doing day and night patrols of the Stewart Island area since Saturday.

An EPA spokeswoman said rangers were still in the area yesterday trying to find the crocodile.

“We have two crocodile traps set in the Sandy Strait,” she said.

“We don't disclose the exact location of the traps to the public because any excessive activity in the area could deter the crocodiles.

“We take all crocodile sightings very seriously.”

A trap was set in the Burrum River near Howard two weeks ago after a local man saw a crocodile at his favourite fishing spot.

EPA staff checked the trap daily for six days and found no sign of crocodile activity. The trap was removed from the Burrum River and is now being used in the Strait.

Any crocodile sightings can be reported to the EPA on 1300 130 372.
