Gas leak causes chaos in city centre

AN emergency situation was declared in Maryborough's CBD last night when a construction crew doing roadworks cut through a major gas main, resulting in the evacuation of more than 40 people.

Police and fire crews were called and an emergency situation was declared by Superintendent Steve Wardrope about 7.30pm so police could evacuate the area.

The Royal Hotel was the main building involved in the evacuation as police closed off Richmond, Wharf, Kent, Ellena and Bazaar streets.

The source of the gas leak was soon identified and the emergency situation was declared over about 8.30pm. Nobody suffered ill effects from the leaking gas.
