SEVERAL legends of Australian sport paid a visit to Torquay State School yesterday as students participated in the Deadly Sports program.
Softball, basketball, touch, rugby league, Aussie rules and traditional indigenous games were included.
The students received coaching from former Brisbane Broncos, Origin and Australian players yesterday, including Darren Smith, and Mick De Vere.
Darryl White and Richard Champion from the Brisbane Lions also helped coach the kids at the school yesterday.
Torquay school teacher Marian Brading said the kids had greatly enjoyed the day.
“They had a fabulous day,” she said.
“We had so much positive feedback, even from those who don’t normally enjoy playing sport.
The kids were excited to meet the legends of sport and the program was such a success the school is looking to hold the sports day again next year.
“The kids were so excited to meet them – their enthusiasm was there all day.”
Ms Brading was also impressed with how the sporting greats coached the kids.
“They were great with them – they worked really well with them,” she said.
The students also heard about some of the sacrifices that athletes have to make to succeed, Ms Brading said.
“Not only do they get the opportunity to learn new skills, they also get to learn about the dedication and attitude required to achieve success in the athlete’s chosen field.
“Hopefully by participating in this program and seeing the positive attitude and role model displayed by these sportsmen and women the students, when confronted with having to make a healthy or unhealthy life choice, will make the healthy one.”
