Teen crash survivors recovering

Two teenage boys who were passengers in this car when it smashed into a tree are starting to make progress in their recovery.

TWO TEENAGE boys involved in last Saturday’s fatal car accident at Tinana are starting to make progress in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Both 16-year-old Maryborough boys were sitting the backseat of the sedan – driven by their 16-year-old friend – when it left Seven Mile Road and smashed into a tree at 5pm.

One received severe leg injuries but has reportedly gained some feeling back in his feet late this week.

The other has undergone major surgery to his oesophagus, lungs and leg.

The other two teenage occupants of the car escaped the wreckage with less serious injuries and have been recovering in the Hervey Bay Hospital.

The front-seat passenger, 21-year-old Rodney Walker, was, however, tragically killed on impact with the tree.

His grieving family, friends and Aussie rules teammates will gather this morning to say their final farewells to the former Aldridge High student and aspiring athlete.

Yesterday a hand-made cross and a photograph were placed at the crash site.

Meanwhile, members of the Aussie rules community have been rallying together this week to raise funds for the families affected by the accident.

Next Saturday a garage sale will be held at the Hervey Bay Bombers home ground on Raward Road, Torquay, 7am to 1pm.

AFL Queensland development officer for the Wide Bay Rob Searle said anyone wanting to donate goods for the sale could visit the grounds from 4.30pm to 5.30pm Wednesday or Friday or telephone 0412 541 916.

A fundraising raffle will also be held at the Maryborough Bears’ Granville home ground on Sunday at noon.

Tickets will go on sale at noon.
